Learn to Write Japanese

Learn how to write a New Year's card in Japanese.
What is "Nen Ga Jyou"?

On this page, firstly you will read a New Year's card which is handwritten, and then will give you some tips for writing "Happy New Year" in Japanese.

By the way, we send a new year card in Japan before the 1st of January, and it is called "Nen ga Jyou"

Japanese kanji symbols for Nen ga jyou

Japanese new year's card

This card is written downwards and you start reading at the top right, down the column.
This is the tradtionall way of writing letters or cards in Japanese.
However, many Japanese people also write words horizontally.

So, Vertically, we read from right to left and top to bottom.
Horizontally, we read from left to right.

Because the vertical writing is more formal or tradtional tone, we write a New Year's greeting card in the tradtional downwards style.

Japanese symbols you must write in a New Years' card

Because the vertical writing is more formal or tradtional tone, we write a New Year's greeting card in the tradtional downwards style.

The first four letters represent "Happy New Year" in Japanese, and called "Kin Ga Shin Nen". There is another way of saying which is written next to it, "A ke ma shi te o me de tou go za i ma su".

The following is how we normally say in the New Year to people in Japanese.
If you are travelling to Japan on the 1st of January, you can say the following phrase to Japanese people.

Happy New Year
(A ke ma shi te
o me de to u)

I hope to see more of you in this year
(ko toshi mo
yo ro shi ku
o nega i shi ma su)

me too
(ko chi ra ko so)
